MEDIA AND PUBLIC ISSUES

Recent media matters have included television network and station representations as well as disputes concerning journalists, media executives and station owners. Litigation subjects have ranged from a station’s Cable Act battle with a major cable operator to federal statutory and constitutional issues.

In addition to cases on the media side of the equation, Mr. Coffey has also represented clients obliged to deal with the media in high visibility cases:

    • Representing Vice President Gore and Senator Lieberman in the extraordinary Presidential Election Recount litigation in 2000 before federal, state and administrative tribunals, at the trial and appellate levels.
    • Advocating for Elian Gonzalez and his U.S. family in one of the most highly publicized cases against the U.S. government in recent years.
    • Successfully overturning the Miami Mayoral election in the late 1990’s based on voter fraud through litigation in multiple state and federal proceedings, in trial and appellate venues.
    • Successfully litigating financial reparations for Freddie Pitts and Wilbert Lee, former death row inmates, in Florida’s most dramatic controversy over wrongful convictions.
    • Spearheading legal efforts in the wake of one of the nation’s largest bank collapses to secure substantial recoveries against federal agencies as well as responsible private parties.
    • Winning an acquittal for a high-profile anti-Castro leader charged with criminal violations of the federal Neutrality Act.
